EAST GIPPSLAND SHIRE COUNCIL In person or online, where else can you access all the things you need, as well as personal service and assistance in finding it? Our libraries are the ultimate search engine. The region of East Gippsland is vast. With such a large area to cover, a number of libraries are in operation in the main centres of Bairnsdale, Lakes Entrance, Orbost and Paynesville, with shopfront locations at Mallacoota and Omeo. These permanent libraries have varied opening hours, which you should check below. Because of the large area that the libraries must service, a mobile library is in operation also that visits 42 sites throughout the region at various times. With access to the internet, magazines, story times and much more, a library is not just a collection of books. Membership is free. Bairnsdale The library is housed in a beautiful heritage building. It also is home to the Hal Porter Study. A librarian at the Bairnsdale Public Library from August 1953 – February 1958, Hal Porter is synonymous with writing and literature. His novels, poetry, plays, short stories and even non-fiction are known to all. Within the library a memorial to him aims to recreate a private study he used at his final home in Ballarat. This area houses the East Gippsland Shire Library Local Studies Collection. A large collection of works by Hal Porter including books, journal articles and letters are also contained here.
